In an age of world-wide telecommunications and instant messaging getting attention is as easy as pushing buttons. Keeping that attention and leveraging it into win-win situations takes more than a phone or a mouse -- it takes communication skills, not just telecommunication skills. What's a business owner to do?The first step is to listen to the experts who study, understand, and know the techniques to make things happen. The next step is to take action and apply the lessons in your daily life. Not only have I listened to other successful people share this little two-step plan -- I've put it into action and worked through my own sticking points. I hope you share the same base goal that I have: to improve the world with every action. Whether you've ever phrased it in such an overarching way or not I suspect you wouldn't be reading this unless you value growth and improvement in your own life to the point that it overflows into the lives of those around you. Tools for becoming "efficiently lazy"We all have the same amount of time each day and so the faster we can get each important task done the more important tasks we can accomplish. Doing this with the minimal energy expendature is efficiency. Because I'm efficiently lazy and so I constantly search out and test new tools to improve my life and the lives of those around me. As a "highly technical boy" many of my tools are electronics or machines, however the most effective tools I've discovered for interacting with humans is Neuro-Linguistic Programming. NLP is about using your greatest asset, your mind, to positively impact the people with whom you interact. If this is your first introduction to NLP you are lucky. I lost months, even years, that I could have been benefiting from NLP because my first exposures actually repelled me from the field. People were pushing NLP as it related to things that did not fit my world view like speed seduction, hypnosis, or trippy New Age experiences. Fortunately for me (and you!) I happened to discover one of the core aspects of NLP that really clicked: language patterns. Immediately my personal life changed. Instead of just playing with words they were revealed as the foundation of reality as we know it. Commitments that had been draining suddenly blossomed. Creating healthy new relationships became straight-forward. And best of all the world became a friendly place full of possibilities again! That was when I decided people need to know about this! Access resources, bypass excuses, learn "self defence"I became conscious of all the amazing reserves of untapped resources each of us has. It is like sitting on the richest oil field in the world and never knowing it! This is because in the past most of us had been held hostage by countless excuses and limiting beliefs. Most of these are not your fault. We are constantly being bombarded by suggestions -- some good, others not so good. After learning NLP one of the biggest improvements in my own personal life has been identifying and rejecting the unintended harmful "programming" over time and replacing it with useful patterns and access to powerful internal resources. I am so glad I learned these patterns before my kids were born. I hear the awful things people tell their children and immediately think of a dozen ways to edify that child while redirecting them. And I just keep thinking "the more people who use this stuff the better the world will be!" Create more win-win situations through manipulation?!I also learned that some people call NLP manipulative. Since I love words I had to look this one up: one of Webster's definitions of manipulate is "to manage artfully or fraudulently." What a wide range of possibilities for that one word! Just like all tools NLP can be used for magnificence or malice. Maxwell could have just as easily used his silver hammer for good as for ill -- framing a Habitat for Humanity house rather than the old ultra-violence. As a chiropracter friend said "the anatomy and kinematics are the same whether you are a skilled doctor adjusting a patient or Steven Segal silencing a terrorist." Artful or fraudulent? Persuasion expert Dave Lakhani has a great distinction between persuasion and the "fraudulent" type of manipulation, what could be called coercion. To paraphrase Dave: creating a win-win situation is persuasion and creating a win-lose situation is coercion. (And for completeness sake lose-lose is just poor compromise.) Ecology isn't just for tree-huggers.The information and skills you are develop from the NLP experience are the hammer or the knowledge of anatomy. What you do with the tools is what determines that you are acting with integrity and positive intent. I naturally fall into the teaching role and so when I finished my NLP Practitioner certification I took immediate action to become a trainer of Neuro-Linguistic Programming and committed to learn in the best possible environment. I had connected with a couple of highly skilled NLP trainers for my Practitioner and Master Practitioner certification. I merrily took Joel and Debra's hearty suggestion and continued on to become licensed as a Trainer of NLP by Dr Richard Bandler, one of the co-founders of the field. I was full of knowledge about NLP, ready to share it with the world, and still plodding along in my business. I shared NLP with a few people here and there before realizing that just doing another Practitioner training was not how I could best serve the world. My biggest business break-through occurred because of a conscious decision and a two-minute conversation -- neither of which would have happened if I had not been at a live event! The missing link...As I drove to my second off-line event I decided that I was not going to be a wall-flower like at my first event. I was chock-full of communication skills and ready to use them. I still didn't know how I wanted to apply my skills and knowledge. Then we had a chance to introduce ourselves to the room. I stood up and said "I'm Wayne Buckhanan and I'm looking for ways to serve people with NLP and accelerated learning." That moment lead to a number of discussions over the rest of the weekend and my business has not been the same since! The most powerful conversation I had that weekend was with Paulie Sabol. Hesitation has been transformed into motivation. You have crossed the 't's and dotted the 'i's internally for yourself and your client. You are in such deep rapport with your client that you notice the last niggling concern they have and are able to address it before they are even conscious of their (former) hesitation. Use the built-in B.S. detectorEveryone has a built-in detector that tells us when something isn't quite right (and some even listen to it!). This detector starts alarming if not everything is in full alignment and in your best interest. Just like there is no way to *make* people do things they wouldn't do otherwise, there is no way to bullshit the detector. Rather than trying to work around the B.S. detector you will learn how to work in total alignment and congruence so that even the most sensitively tuned people will feel that you are genuine and helpful because you will be genuine and helpful! We will even get rid of the "false positives" where people's detectors started to alarm, not because you weren't genuine but because you were nervous or distracted. Tune your voice and words for impactThe words we use communicate less than 25% of our total meaning and yet they can render the other 75% moot with poor choice of phrase. Everyone uses language patterns every day -- some people even use them in a resourceful way! Even the best language patterns in the world will fall flat if delivered with poor tone -- both the context and style in written form and the quality of your voice when speaking. Discover the most common patterns and put them to use for you and for your clients. Little things like "and" versus "but" will bring whole new meaning to your communications. Are you ready to add that extra dimension to the delivery of your meaning? Your voice will get a tune up and your written words will blast off the page. Deliver with appropriate feelingUnless there is full congruence between mind, body, and spirit you will not have the impact you intend to have. Whether it is posture, guestures, or even just the sparkle in your eyes the little things matter -- almost always more than the words you say! Come learn several simple techniques for aligning everything you do and say by being fully present in the moment and in the right state of mind. (Hint: this works in writing too.
